MOST people choose fire mages because all they want is more damage, and they think its cooler hitting harder, they do not think strategically, all they see is (more damage) better than (less damage) but in reality, we can get more frostbolt casts off in a certain time and overall amounting to more damage than they ever could with fireball, not to mention a fire mage's mana consumption is that of a gas guzzler, making it more ideal for lowbie pvp where you know you are going to die anyway. Look over our (frost) talent tree and theres alot of possibilitys. Sure, maybe fire mages are good for PVP because of their fast-kill capabilities, this makes up for a mage's lack of armour and health, but when it comes to some pvp and ALL pve, you'll want to be a frost mage. all with low cooldowns, and, dont forget, summon water elemental.

We get ice barrier, with 24 second cooldown (talent: ice floes 2/2) and being able to absorb 900 damage without interrupting cast (this includes DoTs, melee, and spells) we also have coldsnap (instantly finish all frost cooldowns) and ICE BLOCK, lasts 10 seconds makes you immune to EVERYTHING. To serve that purpose, it gains benefits from talents that affect both Frost and Fire damage. Its primary purpose is to make an Elementalist specialization (one with a balance of points between the Frost and Fire Mage trees) viable for PvE content (see Mage builds). not to mention the chill affects, which can cripple any class (permafrost, %50 slow, increased duration - winter's chill - both talents), also the chill affect created by the frostbolt procs with frostbite, giving you a %15 chance to freeze someone in place for 5 seconds from ANY chill affect, as in frostbolt, and even when someone hits you in melee (chill affect from ice armor). Frostfire Bolt is a Mage ability that came with Wrath of the Lich King. a 60 frost mage could easily crit around 2k - with very little mana cost and reduced threat (talent: frost channeling) and 2.5 sec cast time (talent: improved frostbolt 5/5).

Lvl 60 rank 11 frostbolt + a usual t1/t2 mage's +150/+250 damage, multiply by %6 (talent) add %15 then double.

I'm a 58 ice mage on Medivh, with only +39 frost dmg gear i crit 1.2k, you need to consider: Comment by Thottbotfire mages are USELESS in raids, the only real spell they can use (without blessing of salvation due to threat problems) is scorch, which, is not very strong at all, and still can burn mana fast, not to mention fast cast time, which is bad because this will increase your TPS (Threat Per Second) and you will die FAST.
